Seeking an Assistant Director

Sea to Sky Singers is seeking an Assistant Director. STSS is an unauditioned adult community choir located in Squamish, BC. We currently have 70 members.

The Assistant Director supports the Music Director with input into repertoire selection and concert construction. The Assistant Director supports and helps develop the musical skills of the choir members as well as rehearsing and performing with their [appropriate] section. The Assistant Director reports to the Music Director. This position is a term-to-term contract.

Duties and Attendance Requirements:

  • Attending weekly Tuesday rehearsals from 7-9 PM. During chorus rehearsals, sing on the risers and in seats as a member of your section.

  • Attending and singing as a member for Dress Rehearsals and Concerts.

  • Occasionally leading group warm-ups.

  • Rehearsing and conducting one (or more) pre-selected repertoire pieces; working with the Music Director in regards to score interpretation, score markings and singer preparedness.

  • Leading choir rehearsals when the Music Director is unable due to illness or other reasons. A rehearsal plan will be provided.

  • Leading sectional rehearsals, in own voice part and/or other, as needed.

  • Act as a liason between choir members and the Music Director, as needed.

  • Providing feedback to the Music Director regarding needs of the choir.

Qualifications:

  • Basic piano skills [equivalent to RCM Gr. 6 or above].

  • Vocal training [equivalent to RCM Gr. 8 or above].

  • Understanding of and experience in vocal pedagogy and coaching.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with Music Director, accompanist, and Executive Board.

  • Commitment to fostering a positive, safe, and inclusive environment.

Compensation:

  • Membership Fee for the term.

  • $300/term honorarium.

  • $60 when leading a full rehearsal when the Music Director is unavailable [a plan will be provided].

Audition and Interview Stage:

  • Trial Rehearsal Session: Shortlisted candidates will be invited to conduct a 15-20 minute trial rehearsal session(s) with the choir, focusing on a vocal warmup and a known piece from the choir’s term repertoire. This session(s) will evaluate candidates’; rehearsal techniques, communication skills, and ability to connect with choir members.

  • Interview: You may be interviewed by the selection Committee.
